FAQ: Colorado Concealed Carry Course & CHP Permit Questions

1. What are the current Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) training requirements in 2026?

Under House Bill 24-1174 (effective July 1, 2025), new applicants must complete an in-person training class of at least 8 hours from a Verified Instructor (verified by a Colorado county sheriff). The class must include a written competency exam (minimum 80% score) and live-fire qualification (minimum 70% accuracy on 50 rounds). Renewal applicants need a refresher class of at least 2 hours with the same testing requirements. Online-only or shorter classes no longer qualify. Our 9-hour course exceeds these standards and is taught by a Mesa County Verified Instructor.

2. How much does your Concealed Carry Course cost, and what is included?

The full course is $279 (updated 2026 pricing). This includes: 9 hours of in-person instruction (classroom + live-fire at Cameo Shooting and Education Complex).Nationally recognized Stop the Bleed medical certification ($55 value). Lifetime access to our online training portal with printable drills, updated laws, and skill refreshers ($150 value).Certificate for CHP application. Free retake if you don't pass the first time. Total added value: $465 — all included in the single $279 price. No hidden range fees.

3. What is the difference between your full course and a refresher/renewal class?

Full course (new applicants): 9 hours, covers all state requirements, Stop the Bleed, and lifetime online access. Refresher/renewal (existing permit holders): Runs alongside the full class (morning session), minimum 5 hours, focuses on law updates, skill refresh, and required testing. Price is $150  includes the same bonuses. Check the calendar for combined dates.

4. Where and when are classes held? All classes are held at the Cameo Shooting and Education Complex (east of Grand Junction on I-70/10 Rd).

Upcoming 2026 dates include monthly courses and more — view the full calendar here. Classes are small (max 12 students) for personalized instruction. Lunch is eaten at the range; no off-site time.

5. Do I need any experience to take the Concealed Carry course?

No prior experience is required. We welcome beginners, women, church security teams, and experienced shooters. Instruction starts from basics (safe handling) and builds to defensive skills, live-fire, and real-world scenarios. Our veteran instructors are patient and focus on building confidence.

6. What should I bring to class?

Your own unloaded handgun (any caliber, semi-auto or revolver). At least 2 pistol magazines/speed loaders.     250 rounds of ammunition. Eye and ear protection. Comfortable clothing, closed-toe shoes, hat/sunscreen (outdoor range). Water/snacks, notebook, folding chair (optional). Optional: gun cleaning kit, extra ammo.We provide targets and all instruction. Rental firearms are available for $35.

7. Is Stop the Bleed training really included, and why does it matter?

Yes — every student gets nationally recognized Stop the Bleed certification at no extra cost. This lifesaving training teaches how to identify and control life threatening bleeding (tourniquets, wound packing, direct pressure) — skills that can save lives in emergencies, whether related to firearms or accidents. It's a $55 value and a key part of responsible preparedness.

8. What happens if I don't pass the qualification the first time?

We offer a free retake in a future class — no additional charge. Most students pass on the first try with our thorough instruction, but we want you to leave confident and certified.

9. Can I get my CHP permit after the class?

Yes — upon successful completion, you receive your training certificate the same day (valid 1 year for new applicants). Take it to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office or you local Sheriff's department with your ID and application. Processing usually takes 2–8 weeks. Renewals use a 6-month valid refresher certificate.
